Journal of the Plague Year: Being a transcription of my handwritten journal for 1987 in Cartersville GA.

We moved up onto the Mountain in August 1986 to live in a travel trailer with 3 kids for "six months" while Winn built our house. Five years after starting this journal, I moved out of the partially completed house with our children and divorced Winn.

This journal was an effort to record expenses and labor by various folks including the live-in carpenter Winn hired, Tim. Winn also wanted me to record when the Georgia Power employees passed by to visit their tower and fenced enclosure at the top of the road.

Tim had never built more than a deck before Winn hired him. He was Type 1 diabetic, living with Allison (a sometime nursing student and/or bartender) in a trailer on our property, separated from his wife (but maintained joint checking account), with 2 or 3 small children who occasionally visited us. A year or two later, I was amazed to hear Winn telling some people at a party that he had imagined we were establishing a kind of communal living arrangement. Oh really?

When we arrived, our trailer had no sewer hookup, although Tim had hooked up his own trailer to the septic tank. I dug a shallow trench with a mattock for Tim and Winn to lay the plastic drainpipe to hook up our trailer.
